The Harlingen Public Library is a great resource for learning about local history and culture. Whether you’re researching your family genealogy, digging up high school year book photos, or wondering about the historical context of border issues, the library has the answers!

Digital Archives

The Harlingen Public Library’s Digital Archives contains archived Valley Morning Star newspapers from the years 1929-1976. The search tool allows you to search by year, key word or phrase, and by a person’s name. If you are looking for information in a more recent Valley Morning Star, the library also has microfilms covering the years 1977-2015 that can be accessed in the Periodicals Department.

Local History

A closed stack of non-circulating materials of the Rio Grande Valley, specifically of Harlingen, is located on the second floor in the Archival Room. Ask the staff at the Periodicals desk for help or schedule an appointment with the Reference Librarian.

Genealogy Bay

The Genealogy Bay contains the library’s special non-circulating collection of all things dealing with genealogy. It is located on the second floor, just past the Periodicals. A local genealogy grouped called the Tip-O-Texas Genealogical Society meets regularly at the library. Whether you’re just starting to get into genealogy, or if you’ve been researching your family history for decades, the Tip-O-Texas Genealogical Society welcomes one and all.
